applied micro 에서 중요하게 여기는 것이 consistency 와 bias라는 것도 새삼 연관이 있겠다는 생각이 들었다. 끊임없이 추구하지만 얻기 쉽지 않은 그대, consistency.
영향 평가 (impact evaluation)를 공부하는 데 있어서 선물과 같은 책인 mostly harmless econometrics 에서 이런 표현들이 나온다.
Unbiasedness of the OLS estimators means that E[β_hat] = β, a property that holds in a sample of any size and is stronger than consistency, which means only that we can expect to be close to β in large samples.

stata가 열심히 regression을 돌려 결과를 기다리는 동안 고등학교 졸업하고 암세포 연구실에 나갔던 때가 생각났다. 재미없지는 않았지만 나보다 일찍 출근하여 늦게 퇴근하는 연구실 대학원생들을 보면서 스무살의 나는 그렇게까지 세포를 들여다보고 싶은 열정은 없다고, 내가 바라는 삶도 아니라고 생각했었다.
사실 사회과학도 별반 다르지 않은 것 같고, 야근이 많다는 친구들의 직장도 비슷한 것 같다.
